What is Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a kind of insurance policy that specifically covers those unexpected hiccups that might pop up before or during your trip. It can protect you from a variety of travel-related headaches, like trip cancellations, flight delays, medical emergencies, stolen passports, or stolen luggage. Moreover, it can support you with last-minute hotel stays or travel changes (in case your flight gets delayed or missed). In essence, travel insurances aim at providing you peace of mind when traveling. Such that, you can enjoy your trip without worrying about the possible risks that could disrupt your plans.

Why Backpackers Need Travel Insurance

First, when you plan to explore remote areas or experience adventure activities, the chances of flight cancellations, medical emergencies, and accommodation-related problems are higher. Also, it is important to note that medical services abroad are expensive. Yet, some travel insurance policies don’t include such basics. Thus, you must choose your backpacking insurance carefully.

In addition, as Investopedia notes, some insurers urge travelers on high-risk or costly trips to prioritize insurance. But, if you choose the right travel insurance plan that offers full coverage, you can save hundreds or thousands in a crisis during your trip.

What to Look for in Backpacker InsurCoverage

Long-Stay Coverage

Sometimes, backpacking trips may often extend to months or even years. Thus, it is important to ensure that your travel insurance covers a long period of time. There are many standard policies that limit their travel insurance coverage to around 30 or 31 days. Therefore, you should look for long-stay coverage travel insurance to have peace of mind throughout your journey.

Adventure Activity Protection

When it comes to backpacking, it is better to look for insurance policies that cover activities like cycling, water sports, or trekking up to 3,000 m or beyond. Some travel insurance policies add dozens of activities as their standard benefits.

Medical and Rescue Coverage

You need to choose travel insurance, which provides medical expense coverage, hospital evacuation, and repatriation. It is vital to look for insurers with worldwide coverage. Even repatriation is covered in most backpackers’ insurance plans.

Flexibility on the Road

Choosing policies that enable you to buy or extend insurance while traveling can help you eliminate the hassle if your itinerary changes.

Transparency and Reputation

Before picking a policy, you should always read the full insurance policy details carefully. Try to disclose pre-existing conditions upfront; otherwise, claims may be denied. Additionally, go for user reviews on trusted review platforms like Reddit or Trustpilot to know about others’ claim experiences.

Tips for Choosing and Using Your Insurance

1. Buy Early: It is always better to buy as soon as you book your trip. Consequently, it can protect your travel deposits and trip cancellation issues.

2. Read the fine print: While picking a travel plan, read the policy details, terms, and conditions in the agreement carefully. Likely, look for exclusions regarding cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and activity limits.

3. Disclose health conditions: It is important to disclose your pre-existing medical condition to your insurer initially. If not, your claims related to that particular medical condition may be denied. This is because they have the right to reject claims or cancel policies in case of undisclosed pre-existing conditions (even if the condition was diagnosed before purchasing the policy).

4. Keep documentation: Try to keep all documentation, including bills, receipts, and claim records for all incidents. It makes claims hassle-free.

5. Compare before choosing: Before choosing a plan, always compare different plans based on the nature of your travel plan. Look for different insurance providers, and then, closely evaluate their value, coverage, and claim processes.

Final Thoughts

Travel insurance for backpackers is one of those topics that is relegated to minimum consideration while planning a trip. However, unexpected medical emergencies, stolen passports, missed flights, legal threats, etc., may wreck your bank balance and peace of mind, especially when travelling overseas. Affordable travel insurance options like SafetyWing and Heymondo, as well as adventure-ready plans like World Nomads, will travel with confidence. Therefore, the one thing you should never ignore while travelling abroad is your travel insurance.
