Overview
Haleakala's 10,023-foot summit looks down into a vast volcanic crater of red and black cinder cones, and sunrise here above the clouds is one of Hawaii's signature experiences. The park also protects the rare silversword plant and, on the coast, the Kipahulu district with Oheo Gulch and the bamboo-lined Pipiwai Trail.
Insider Knowledge
Book a sunrise vehicle reservation on Recreation.gov; slots open 60 days ahead and sell out fast.
Bring winter layers, a hat and gloves, because summit temperatures are often 30-40°F (-1 to 4°C) before dawn.
Leave Kihei or Kaanapali around 3:00 AM to reach the summit about 30-45 minutes before sunrise.
Stay for the crater views after sunrise or walk part of the Keoneheehee (Sliding Sands) Trail.
Common Questions
Yes. Every vehicle entering the summit area during sunrise hours needs an advance reservation from Recreation.gov, plus the regular entrance fee.
Sunset and stargazing visits do not need a reservation, but the summit gets cold and windy fast.
Your entrance receipt also covers the Kipahulu district on the Road to Hana within the 3-day window.
