Route 66

Travel Guide

Route 66 is the great American road trip: roughly 2,400 miles of the Mother Road from downtown Chicago to the Pacific at Santa Monica, crossing eight states and three time zones. This Chicago to Santa Monica itinerary packs it into 10 days, which is fast. Expect about 200 to 330 miles and five to seven hours behind the wheel most days, mixing interstate stretches with the best surviving original alignments; two to three weeks is ideal if you can spare it. Start with a photo at the Begin sign, then roll past Illinois giants, the bent Chain of Rocks Bridge over the Mississippi and Ozark frozen custard stands. Cross the short Kansas corner and Oklahoma's diners before painting your own stripe at Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo. In New Mexico, sleep under the glowing neon of the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, then drive through the badlands of Petrified Forest National Park, the only national park that protects a stretch of Route 66. A day off the road from Williams takes you to the Grand Canyon's South Rim. The finale climbs over the Black Mountains to Oatman, crosses the Mojave and ends with a sunset at the Santa Monica Pier. Book classic motels ahead in spring and fall.

Getting Around
You need a car. Rent one-way from Chicago to Los Angeles and expect a drop fee, often several hundred dollars. Much of the old road is paralleled by I-55, I-44, I-40 and I-15, so drivers hop between the interstate and original alignments. Use a turn-by-turn Route 66 guidebook or app, as signage is patchy, and fill up before long empty stretches such as the Mojave between Needles and Barstow.

Blue Swallow Motel1

Must Visit

Blue Swallow Motel

A 1939 motor court in Tucumcari, New Mexico, with one of the most photographed neon signs on Route 66 and a garage beside each room. Lovingly restored, it's a working motel where you can sleep in a piece of road-trip history and watch the sign glow after dark.

Cadillac Ranch2

Must Visit

Cadillac Ranch

A public art installation just west of Amarillo, Texas, where ten Cadillacs are buried nose-first in a field beside I-40. Created in 1974 by the Ant Farm art collective, it invites visitors to add their own spray paint, so the cars' colors change daily.

Chain of Rocks Bridge3

Must Visit

Chain of Rocks Bridge

A mile-long former Route 66 bridge over the Mississippi River just north of St. Louis, famous for its unusual 22-degree bend midstream. Closed to cars for decades, it's now a pedestrian and bike path linking Illinois and Missouri, with big river views and the old castle-like water intake towers.

Petrified Forest National Park4

Must Visit

Petrified Forest National Park

The only national park that protects a section of Route 66, in northeastern Arizona near Holbrook. A 28-mile park road links the banded badlands of the Painted Desert with fields of petrified logs more than 200 million years old, plus a rusted 1932 Studebaker marking the old Route 66 alignment.

Route 66 Begin Sign5

Must Visit

Route 66 Begin Sign

The brown Historic Route 66 Begin sign on Adams Street at Michigan Avenue marks the start of the Mother Road in downtown Chicago. It's the traditional first photo of any Route 66 trip, steps from the Art Institute and a short walk from Lou Mitchell's, the long-running diner beloved by road trippers.

Santa Monica Pier

Must Visit

Santa Monica Pier

The pier marks the symbolic western end of Route 66, with an End of the Trail sign, the Pacific Park Ferris wheel, a historic carousel and long views along the coast. It's a joyful place to toast the end of a 2,400-mile drive as the sun sets over the Pacific.
